The debut album from Italian guitarist Stefano Viana has been promoted here at GDM previously. He's an artist that has centered his work around many of the great acts of the 80's, and had already created two unreleased albums before getting involved with keyboardist/producer Alessandro Del Vecchio. Many of the names you see on this debut CD are well known to GDM readers; the personnel having played on albums by the likes of Issa, Hardline, Skill In Veins, Tarja Turunen and Kelly Keeling. The album was produced by Stefano Viana and co-produced by Del Vecchio.

The Songs
Viana's guitarwork hits you in the face from the outset. 'Straight Between Our Hearts' is a pretty good opener, with some flashy playing. Del Vecchio handles all the lead vocals on the album, so this is the first time we hear him singing in a full capacity, something which I've been asking for awhile now. His style is similar to Revolution Saints bad-boy drummer Deen Castronovo. 'Feel Your Love Tonight' aches as the Journey like mid-range rocker, the pleading vocal tugging at the heartstrings as well as the bodice laces I reckon! In keeping with the hot and steamy theme, next up is 'Night Of Fire', so one can assume what is going on here.. lol! The backing choruses are all over the place which makes it an uneven listen. Gang chants can be made to sound good but it takes effort to get it right. On this occasion, not quite. The piano led ballad 'Follow The Dawn' didn't do it for me, while 'A New Love' heavies up but ultimately it wasn't a convincing listen. From here, I lost engagement with the remainder of the album, and despite a decent acoustic ballad 'That Place Is You', there was little of interest to get me truly excited. It probably leads to the quality of the songs. Artists might think these are great, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the wood and the trees. When you listen to hundreds of different songs by different artists day in and day out as part of your job reviewing such albums, you can soon tell what works and what doesn't.

In Summary
Viana is definitely at the heavier end of the spectrum of Italian melodic rock, so don't be comparing it to Lionville or anything similar. Maybe HungryHeart might be a better pitch. A lot of this album has some good moments, but I somehow think it's not going to stun fans into thinking this is the next coming for Italian rock. Good, solid stuff but without the hundreds and thousands.

Alessandro is a very talented individual especially when it comes to producing and mixing. He has listened a lot of music and he's one of the most hard-working and recognizable figures in the scene at the moment. I consider him one of the best producers of his generation. He's also a great keyboardist as well as he possesess a very capable voice. I'm not too fussed about his songwriting though plus I think he is not doing good to his career with all this recent overexposure, being a part of litterally everything that comes out.

think Alessandro is the reason why all Frontiers releases sound similar after a while. A fact that recently has been complained quite a lot about on this site. Well, not much of a surprise ... he produces most of them ...
I agree to everything GtJ said above, except that I am not that convinced of Alessandro's "capable" voice.
