A name that has passed through the ranks of album releases from 1989, along with many others. It seems record labels were doing the rounds of male solo artists during this timeframe, a scattered look back through the 80's looking glass will see popular drawcards, and then again one-off wonders (think Fernando Saunders, Donnie Miller, Tim Karr, Mick Brosnan and Kevin Paige among others). Include also New York/New Jersey veteran Bernie Shanahan. This bloke is a very talented singer/songwriter, and has even done work with Desmond Child (who provides backing vocals on this album, from what I can tell), Michael Bolton, Cher and Alice Cooper. Bernie was also married to female pop rocker Carolyn Mas at one stage, around the 1980 timeframe. Bernie's debut album for Atlantic came out in 1989, and sits nicely in the categories of music we love here at GDM. The guy who comes closest in the comparison stakes is the late Troy Newman, who delivered a near-perfect acoustic/electric hybrid set in 1991 produced by Greg Ladanyi.

The Songs
It's hard to ignore the Bruce Springsteen sound-check to 'Dancin' In The Dark' with Bernie's opener 'Another Lonely Night'. It also crosses over into the sort of AOR that Michael O'Brien dabbled in. 'Living A Lie' definitely compares closely to the aforementioned Troy Newman, a lovely tune. The cross-over country-styled 'Back To The Field' gets an up-vote from me. The first true anthem 'Pray For Rain' is big on the imploring vocal. 'The Night Is Never Long Enough' compares favourably to the opener 'Another Lonely Night'. In fact it could very well be Part 2.

Another mostly acoustic effort in 'No Place Like Home' is ideal. Toss in the organ parts and backing vocals for extra impact. 'At The End Of The Day' is another winner, in the style of Stan Meissner, but the lush acoustic mid-west tune 'Only Gold' is the album highlight for mine. One for those long drives across the continent. Lovely stuff. 'Lost In The Lights Of Broadway' is the album's change-up song, big on sassy female backing vocals and brass work. I was going to say Sha-Na-Na.. Some others might hear it differently. The finale is a piano ballad 'Believe It Or Not', which concludes the album on a subdued note.

In Summary
All in all, Bernie has delivered a varied and enjoyable album. It's not quite clear who plays what on the album. As I don't own a physical copy of the CD, I am none the wiser. Searches elsewhere have proved fruitless. Bernie's website is no longer operating, but from all accounts, he's still playing, and these days living down in sunny Florida. You can also check him out on Facebook.
