It was without doubt, one of the surprise breakout albums of 1989, with a hit single that spanned the globe. Of course we are talking about Canadian songstress Alannah Myles (birth surname Byles). Whether by fluke or by design, this record fell into a niche/gap that was tailor-made for the late 80's. Caught between the visual element of MTV (and Alannah was alluring more than most) as well as the aural (great songs, vocals and production), it was no wonder that Atlantic caught themselves a winner. Produced by Dave Tyson (The Arrows), this album struck pay-dirt and made Ms Myles a household name at the time.

The Songs
Initially, it wasn't all plain sailing for Alannah, as she was hitting road blocks and dead-ends in Canada during the mid 80's. Interestingly, that she signed a deal in 1987 with Atlantic Records out of the USA, with head honcho Ahmet Ertegun signing her up on the spot. The rest as they say, is history. The album was released on March 28th, 1989, and there was no doubting the success pinged on the four bonafide standouts: 'Black Velvet', 'Love Is', 'Lover Of Mine', and 'Still Got This Thing For You'. The biggest hit was 'Black Velvet' which went to #1 in many countries around the world. If you didn't hear this song on the radio you must've been hiding out in the woods or something. The whole album is entertaining, and alternates between hard rock and stylish pop.

In Summary
Plaudits would soon follow, Alannah won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance in 1991 as well as three Juno Awards. The success of the album would roll on well into 1990 and also 1991. Her second album 'Rockinghorse' came out in 1992, and though it featured two well-known tracks (the title track 'Rockinghorse' and the lead off single 'Song Instead Of A Kiss'), the sales were not in the same league as the debut. Alannah is still out there, you can catch her on Facebook.

Never understood her appeal musically? Fairly average stuff, in particular the big single.

First became aware of Alannah thanks to the 'Black Velvet' video being played on Much Music when I visited Hamilton, Ontario to do a featur for K! on Brughtin Rock. The station played Sass Jordan's 'Tell Somebody' straight afterwards. I went over to the record store across the street from my hotel as soon as it opened and picked up both albums. I interviewed Alannah on her first trip to the UK promoting the album. She was lovely and impressed by my knowledge of òbscure Canadian rock bands.
